The quality of public education is everyone’s responsibility. Puerto Rico’s public education system is in a crisis and our children are not the only ones falling behind.  Rising crime, teen pregnancy and illiteracy rates have become part of our reality. Schools in Puerto Rico are not showing any progress and this comes to high social cost.

Puerto Rico is the third largest school district in the United States with approximately 560,000 students, 1,523 schools and 42,000 teachers.
According to the Puerto Rican Scolastic Tests, 45% of the students are not fluent in Spanish, 40% are not fluent in English and 45% are not competent in Math.
749 schools are under the Improvement Plan, which means that they have not compiled the minimum requirements of academic progress established by federal law for more than two consecutive years.

Sapientis is a non-profit organization that works to improve the quality of public education in Puerto Rico.  We are building a movement that advocates for changes in the Island’s educational system. Our belief is that to successfully improve schools, all sectors of society must be involved in being part of the solution.
