Schools on the Move Front-line Educators Get Involved
Youth Leadership

Students should have a voice in shaping their education and helping improve their schools.  The Youth Leadership program seeks to stimulate their academic interests and desire to work together in order to improve their academic community.

This program recruits and develops the leadership skills of 100 middle and high school students to help them have a positive impact on their schools.  We train these students with the aim of providing them the necessary tools to effectively wield leadership.  By identifying the particular problems their schools face and assisting them in creating projects to improve academic achievement and the school environment, students learn to take the initiative in changing their situation for the better.  This program is currently implemented at Ramón Power y Giralt Secondary School and República del Perú Middle School, which serve the Luis Llorens Torres public housing project, and Albert Einstein Secondary School in Santurce.

Some of the most important achievements of this program in 2008 include:

80% of participants have a better understanding of the public education system in general.

80% of participants believe they can diagnose the root causes of the challenges their schools face.

90% of participants think Sapientis provides meaningful support and know-how for their planning efforts.

90% of participants think the ongoing support they receive from Sapientis helps them foster progress in their schools.

For the past two years, we have held our Leadership Summer Camp in Guajataka as a strategy to recruit students into the Youth Leadership program.  To learn more about the experiences of the students during the 2008 summer camp, watch the video below.
